Message
from the Chair
I
had the opportunity to attend PMI's EMEA Leadership Institute
Meeting in Malta in May, and it was a wonderful experience.
It was a very 'international' event that was enhanced by the beautiful
Mediterranean scenery. I met a number of individuals from both
chapters and other virtual communities who were very interested
in WiPM, in particular how we can help them expand female participation
in project management. As a result of some of those conversations,
we are now exploring ways to both enhance and increase the SIG's
presence in non-North American geographies. I hope to have similar
conversations with component leaders during PMI Latin America
Leadership Institute Meeting coming up in August , as I will also
be attending that event
As you may or may not be aware, PMI has an two-part initiative
underway to restructure it's geographic and virtual communities
to enhance membership value and experience, and focus on PMI's
strategic objectives. As part of the Community Transformation
Project (CTP), A number of chapters are moving into the chapter
with branches model which was rolled out last year. The Virtual
Community Project (VCP) is currently underway and will soon
launch two pilots for the new organizational models. Regular updates
on these activities can be found in PMIToday (included
with your PMNetwork magazine).
I also had an opportunity to be one of several presenters at the
Women in Project Management Conference in Columbus, Ohio,
in June, which was sponsored by several PMI chapters. It was a
great opportunity to meet many local SIG members, and the SIG
Board is looking to participate (or host) similar regional-based
events in the future. On a related note, former WIPM SIG board
member Brenda Treasure, PMP is program chair for the 5th
Annual PM OZ (Australia) Conference 18-20 Aug 2008 in
conjunction with PMI Melbourne Chapter.

Announces Changes to PMP® Credential Holders' Expiration Dates
Currently, all PMP credential holders expire on 31 December
of the third year after they earn the credential. With this change,
PMP credential holders will be assigned new PMP expiration dates
that correspond with the anniversary date of the bestowal of their
credential. The result is a simplification of the PMP certification
cycle. The transition to the new system will begin taking place
in late August 2008. Learn

Your Average Work-Life Balance Challenge
Did
you know that during a job interview, a Brazilian woman can
be asked about birth control ? ...that they can also be asked
about their marital status, because the general preference of
employers is to hire single women who are less likely to get
pregnant? Yes, it's true--even though Brazil leads South America
with women comprising more than 50% of its workforce and 30%
of executive positions.
Social pressures, disrespect and cultural stereotypes continue
to be a major influence on Latin American women. Insufficient
or unsatisfactory child care, as in many other countries, is
a problem that falls primarily onto women. There is still the
mindset that women should remain at home, and men should not
pitch in. And those situations are perpetuated not only by male
bosses, but also by Brazilian women themselves in some instances.
Many of the major multinational corporations that are employers
in Brazil--such as IBM, Citi, McDonald's, Shell, WalMart--are
making significant efforts to consistently bring diversity practices
(from the U.S., for example) to their international locations.
In Fact, IBM was the host sponsor for Working Mother Media's
First Global Women's Town Hall held in August 2007 in Sao
Paulo, Brazil. And IBM and Shell sponsored the 2007 Workuing
Mother Media's WebSeminar Celebrating International Women's
Day. The 2nd Global Women's Town Hall will be held on
August 8, 2008 in South Africa.
